Discovering The Chiropractic Approach To Health

Dr. Robert Vano was just like any typical 19-year old; not quite certain what he wanted to do in life, but kept an open-mind to new experiences.

While working as a short-order cook at a local Bob Evan's restaurant Dr. Vano met a waitress who told him her boyfriend was a doctor.  When asked what kind of doctor, she replied enthusiastically, “a chiropractor!”  She realized Dr. Vano's interest and a few days later, he was invited to visit that doctor's office.  During his visit, Dr. Ken Pennell showed and explained models of the human spine and nerve system.  He learned that day, that every system in the body is under the control of the nerve system and when the nerve system is disturbed, the body does not function properly and is unable to maintain a state of optimal health.  For the first time in his life, the young Dr. Vano-to-be, discovered that “our bodies are self-healing and self-regulating; that health comes from within, not from putting things into my body”, explained Dr. Vano.

Growing up, he was exposed to the traditional medical approach to health; to ingest something to make him feel better rather than doing things to keep him better.  Discovering the chiropractic approach to health was truly "health" care, unlike the "sickness" care he was used to, Dr. Vano realized he had stumbled onto his career.  From that day onward, “becoming a Doctor of Chiropractic was my goal in life."  Dr. Vano explains that as he was walking out of Dr. Pennell's office that day, he took a moment, paused, looked back at Dr. Pennell's sign above his door and thought to himself, “Someday, I will have my own office - just like this one."

Chiropractic Education

To assist in paying for chiropractic college, Dr. Vano joined the U.S. Army.  He enlisted as a combat medic and the GI Bill provided the financial support needed to start chiropractic college.  Wanting the best education possible, Dr. Vano chose the founding school of chiropractic; Palmer College of Chiropractic.  “I thought if I was going to become a chiropractor, I wanted to graduate from the best school in the world,” smiled Dr. Vano.  Fortunately the U.S. Army prepared Dr. Vano for the grueling workload of the course.  He remembers days that started at 7 am and did not end until the labs closed at 11 pm.  “I remember that experience as if it were yesterday”, he explains.

Family

Dr. Vano married Corinne while in chiropractic college. Six weeks after his graduation from Palmer, Corinne gave birth to their twins, Katlyn and Matthew.  Their birthday is Dr. Vano’s favorite day of the year!

Living the Chiropractic Lifestyle

Practicing what he teaches, Dr. Vano enjoys doing things that stimulate his mind and body. This involves a routine of exercises, reading self development books, listening to tapes or CDs, and talking and listening to other people every day. Dr. Vano has his spine checked at least once each week and more frequently if he’s under additional stress. “It's easier to stay healthy than it is to regain health.”, says Dr. Vano. He continued, “Besides, my body adapts better to all the things in my life, when I stay well adjusted.”  That's what Dr. Vano wants his community to understand - that chiropractic is something we do to help us be the best person we could possibly be, regardless of how we feel.

Dr. Vano's hobbies include cycling and trap shooting.  "I find both of these sports challenging and they both require a lot of discipline and focus", he says.  He talks about how both sports are just as much mental as they are physical.  "I've cycled from Pittsburgh to Washington, DC on the Great Allegheny Passage and the C & O Canal Towpath trails covering more than 320 miles", he says.  In 2012, he and his family and his friend of more than 30 years, Don, completed the trip in 5 days.  In 2013, he and Don attemted the same trip in only 4 days, but fell 43 miles short due to a broken wheel.  He recalls, "That was a rough ride.  We had to ride 100 miles each of the first 2 days.  It rained hard on us on the first day and at the same time, Don got a flat tire.  My feet hurt.  My butt hurt.  My hands were numb and tingling for about 10 months following that ride.  So, it's hard to forget an experience like that".  In 2013, we also did the Bon Ton Roulet in New York's Finger Lakes region.  "That was a nice ride.  The scenery was beautiful, but the hills are what got the best of me.  I actually pushed my bike up one hill on the second day.  And some of the long grades we rode by the end of the week made me realize I just wasn't completely ready for the ride".  And in 2014, Dr. Vano rode the Register's Annual Great Bicycle Ride Across Iowa (RAGBRAI), which is known as the biggest bicycle event in the world, covering 489 miles across the State of Iowa in seven days. Remembering his past experiences, he set out to make his RAGBRAI experience more enjoyable by losing 45 pounds and training regularly before he went to Iowa to meet up with more than 10,000 other cyclists from around the world.  "In 2015, I logged about 4000 miles on my bike", he states.  He continues, "...and I know getting my spine checked and adjusted regularly through the year helped me be able to do that....and I know I can do more if I keep chiropractic as a part of my lifestyle".

Invitation For A Complimentary Orientation

“Now that you know me better, I'd like to get to know you. That's why I'm inviting you for a Complimentary Orientation to our office. Why do I offer this, you might ask? Because if it weren't for the time that Dr. Ken Pennell took with me when I was first introduced to chiropractic at 19 years of age, I would not have fallen in love with it the way I have. I want you to see and discover for yourself what chiropractic care is all about. I want you to love chiropractic like I do! Call or email me by using the short form on our Contact Us page."
